About this Amethyst bracelet
The Greeks named it amethystos — 'not drunk' — believing it kept the mind clear under pressure. Two thousand years later the same violet stone is still worn for the same reason: a tactile anchor for a restless mind.
It moves quietly through Mauritian life — on the wrists of Reduit students before exam fortnight, of mothers managing school runs, of professionals between meetings in Ebene. Each bracelet is handcrafted in our Pointe aux Sables atelier. 2187.
History
Historically highly prized by ancient royalty and clergy, amethyst was considered equal in value to ruby and emerald before the discovery of large Brazilian deposits. Ancient Greeks and Romans traditionally wore the stone and carved drinking vessels from it, associating the crystal with clarity of thought and the prevention of intoxication. In medieval Europe, it was a symbol of piety for the Catholic Church. The name originates from the ancient Greek word amethystos, which translates directly to 'not intoxicated'.
