History
Historically known as schorl, black tourmaline was extensively mined in Saxony, Germany, as early as the fifteenth century. Ancient magicians and shamans traditionally relied upon black tourmaline as a talisman to protect against negative entities and earthbound spirits during ritual work. It gained significant popularity in Victorian England as a featured stone in mourning jewellery. The modern name originates from the Sinhalese word toramalli, which was historically applied to various mixed coloured stones found in Ceylon.
