History
Celestine, also called celestite, was named in 1799 from the Latin 'caelestis' — heavenly — for the gentle sky-blue of its finest crystals. Chemically it is strontium sulfate and remains the principal ore of strontium, the element that lends fireworks and signal flares their deep red flame. It is prized by collectors for hollow geodes lined with delicate blue crystals, the most celebrated coming from Madagascar and from Put-in-Bay on Ohio's South Bass Island. Being soft and light-sensitive, it has always been treated as a specimen stone rather than a hardwearing gem.
