History
The ancient Chinese traditionally revered green and purple fluorite, carving intricate vessels and statuettes from the material for centuries. In ancient Rome, it was believed that drinking from a fluorite vessel imparted the flavour of wine without the intoxicating effects, a tradition similar to amethyst. The name stems from the Latin verb 'fluere', meaning to flow, as it was historically used as a flux in the smelting process.
