History

Hematite was extensively used by ancient cultures; a red ochre form of the mineral is found in Paleolithic cave paintings. Ancient Egyptians traditionally carved it into protective amulets, while Roman soldiers associated the iron-rich stone with Mars, the god of war, wearing it to instil courage. The name derives from the ancient Greek word 'haima', meaning blood, referencing the dark red streak the stone leaves when scratched.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hematite too heavy for daily wear?

Depends on the size. 6mm is genuinely light. 8mm is a noticeable but settled weight — the size most people return to. 10mm is substantial, which most wearers either love ("I can feel it, that's the point") or find too much for desk work. If you're not sure, start at 8mm — we restring up or down at member rates.

Why must I keep hematite away from water?

Hematite is iron oxide. Water — especially the chlorinated or salty water you find in Mauritius — accelerates surface oxidation and the mirror finish dulls to a flat grey. Wipe the beads with a dry cloth. For energetic cleansing, rest the bracelet on a bed of dry brown rice overnight, then discard the rice.

Is this magnetic hematite or natural hematite?

Natural. There's a synthetic product sold as 'magnetic hematite' (it's really ferrite ceramic, not the stone) that holds a magnet — that isn't what we use. Real hematite is very weakly magnetic at best and won't lift a paperclip. If a tourist-strip bracelet sticks to a fridge, it isn't hematite.

Will the mirror polish stay sharp?

Mostly yes. Hematite holds polish exceptionally well — much better than amethyst or rose quartz — because of its density. The two things that dull it are repeated water exposure (see above) and abrasive contact with concrete, gym equipment, or sand. Daily indoor and office wear keeps the mirror finish sharp for years.
