About Labradorite
The northern feldspar that flashes with trapped light.
History
Labradorite was first recorded in 1770 on Paul Island off the coast of Labrador, Canada, by Moravian missionaries, and takes its name from that coastline. An Inuit legend holds that the Northern Lights were once trapped inside the rock along the shore until a passing warrior struck it with his spear and freed most of the light — the shimmering play of colour, called labradorescence, being the portion that remained caught in the stone. A rarer, more vividly coloured variety found in Finland is known as spectrolite.
