Obsidian Mani Mantra — Oṃ Maṇi Padme Hūṃ

The mantra is traditionally considered untranslatable — its meaning unfolds across six distinct teachings. The popular shorthand "the jewel is in the lotus" misses the depth. Oṃ represents the transformation of impure body / speech / mind into their awakened counterparts; Maṇi represents method (compassion, bodhicitta); Padme represents wisdom; Hūṃ represents their indivisibility. Together they map the entire Mahāyāna Buddhist path.

Black obsidian is volcanic glass — formed when lava cools too quickly to crystallise. Tradition treats it as the most absorbing of natural materials, used historically for protection and the transmutation of dense energy. Pairing it with a mantra of universal compassion creates a layered object: the stone absorbs and transmutes; the mantra purifies and awakens. The two work in concert.

There is no single rule. Some wear it in silent recitation, mentally repeating the mantra while tracing the syllables with the thumb (the same gesture used on Tibetan malas). Some keep the bead simply as a daily reminder. Some wear it during meditation only. None of these is more correct than the others — what matters is the intention and the respect for the source tradition.

Wearing it as a generic charm without that context is considered disrespectful by many practitioners. Cleanse energetically by smudging with incense or resting briefly under moonlight. Avoid prolonged direct sun. Many practitioners also recite the mantra once aloud over the bead after cleansing, as a way of re-establishing intention.
